OUR PROJECTS
Past Projects
-
In 2024, Climate Sigma supported MfE’s advice to the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee’s Inquiry on Climate Adaptation.
-
The 2023 Climate Stress Test (CST), led by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ), simulated the impact of severe climate risks on the country's largest banks. The test, set in a "Too Little, Too Late" scenario, assessed how banks would respond to prolonged climate challenges, including extreme weather and policy shifts.
We are proud to contribute to evaluating the financial resilience of major banks against climate-related risks. RBNZ’s CST provides invaluable insights for improving long-term risk management. We continue to support the ongoing work of stress-testing and advancing climate resilience across the sector. To estimate the change in flood damage under various climate change scenarios while lacking a comprehensive set of data, Climate developed a simplified flood damage methodology. This simplified methodology can be seen in Appendix I of the 2023 Climate Stress Test Results.

Whakahura was a five-year MBIE-funded interdisciplinary research programme. The goal of this project was to improve understanding of how and why extreme weather has affected New Zealand in the 20th century, and to develop new tools to improve the forecasting of extreme weather events in the next four decades.
-
The Extreme Weather Research Platform (EWRP) was a $10.8 million platform for urgent scientific research and data collection funded by MBIE as a response to the 2023 North Island Extreme Weather Events. The platform was coordinated by Climate Sigma and the Resilience to Nature’s Challenges National Science Challenge.
